In today’s world, it can be very easy to focus on the things we don’t have rather than pay thanks to the things that we do have. Indeed, that’s when keeping a gratitude journal comes in to play. Not only does it take the focus off our unnecessary wants, it gives us a reason to reflect on all of the good things in our lives. And you shouldn’t limit the project to just yourself. Instead, involve the whole family and let the gratitude journal your children keep become a way to show them what is truly important in their lives.

Keeping a gratitude journal makes it easier to focus on priorities. It shows us how our past wants were achieved or dismissed and it gives us an idea of what areas of our lives are good and which areas need improvement. For example, we may have created a good career, but haven’t kept the friends from our past as close as we would have liked to. The gratitude journal can help us find a way to reconnect with our old gang and find ways to let them know how much that part of your life meant to you.

Find Journal Material You Thought Was Long Forgotten

Whether you are new to journaling or a seasoned veteran, there are likely times in your life that you wish you had kept better records of. This can be a feeling of overwhelm or even sorrow, knowing that it would be, at best, difficult to catch up or retrieve those lost memories.

In attempting to keep in contact with separated loved ones, we often communicate through email, updating our lives. These emails are surprisingly saturated with details of our lives and are stored for pretty much as long as we use the email account.

These letters work as great journal entries and can help fill in gaps you thought were long forgotten. To find them, go into the ‘Sent’ folder of your email account. Scroll to the date you are looking to fill and look for emails you sent to family and friends. You can either use them in total or edit them to fit your needs.

Stephen R. Covey’s Journal Tips

I have been reading the book “Living the 7 Habits” by the famed author of “7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, Stephen R. Covey. It is filled with stories of people who used the 7 habits in their own lives and commentary by Covey throughout.

One particular story titled “The Journal” discusses an embattled father going through a divorce. He was torn by the fact that he wasn’t going to be able to see his 3-year-old son as much and influence him as his father. Covey had the inspiration to encourage him to keep a journal for his son and though it wouldn’t do much for the boy in his younger years, it would mean much more later in life. The man expressed how liberating this experience was later. Although these ideas are about keeping a journal for a child, almost all of them apply to your personal journal or diary as well.

  1. Make sure you date all the entries.
  2. Share really specific experiences that they will be able to remember.
  3. Set aside a regular time to write in the journal.

3 Tips That Will Improve Today’s Journal Entry

Many of my journal entries are lame. I’ll man up and admit it. They could have been written by Watson, the IBM Jeopardy robot.

It’s not that I don’t care or don’t try, I just get lazy sometimes. I leave out the real substance and settle for the Oreo cookies that go with every meal- a log of the days events.

But fortunately I try and improve every day as well. Sometimes I make a concerted effort to stay away from the empty calories and go for the healthy stuff. The kind my mom used to hide in our pancakes.

Like cracked wheat and stuff.

So, here are 3 quick tips that I sometimes use that will improve your journal TODAY:

  1. Before you write anything, stop. Spend two minutes thinking about something you are grateful for in your life or that happened that day.
  2. Ask yourself this one question: “If I could relive any one day in my life, would I relive this one? Why or why not?
  3. End your entry with one simple goal you know you will accomplish tomorrow. The smaller the better. Try something like “Say hi to that guy no one talks to.” or “Only watch one episode of Psych on Netflix”

Easy Reminders

One of the hardest parts of journaling, especially in the beginning, is just remembering to do it. No matter how highly we prioritize writing in a journal, there will always be something more important such as family or work.

A simple tip that can turn a hope into a habit is creating reminders and all you need is your cell phone. Go into the calendar and create a new event. Call it “Write in Journal”, or something like that and set it to repeat daily. Set the time at the most likely time that you will have a few minutes (probably night or morning) and make sure to turn the alarm on. Then, each day you will get a pesky reminder to just jot down a few thoughts on the day.

Just don’t blame me when you throw your phone through the window.
